A DAY AT SHORE BREAK TREATMENT CENTER

Here at Shore Break clients begin their day by waking up and having a snack with coffee or juice. Clients are then taken by the staff to a 12-Step meeting. During the morning meeting, clients are exposed to the reality of recovering alcoholics and addicts.

The sincerity of each member of AA/NA sharing about the difficulty of staying sober during their early recovery helps everyone to remember where they came from and where they are going.

The wonderful talk of a sober female member of 4 years speaks out to a silent group of men and women and holds the ear of every member. The women in the meeting are shaking their heads as if they understand exactly what she is going through. The men relate to some of what she is saying.

Next, a male member speaks, stating in his own words the similarity of what was shared. Then he talks out to all the newcomers, assuring that they too can have what they have, Sobriety and hope.

The meeting's over and the van arrives to take the clients back to the treatment center for some breakfast. Everyone is so excited talking about the meeting and how they related to some of what the people who shared. Excitement is in the air. Breakfast is over and now it’s time to get busy.

First group therapy begins, the group settles and the facilitator smiles and says “Good Morning” and the group replies good morning. The facilitator notices that everyone is awake and ready. One of the clients speaks out what a great meeting! And once again the group speaks out the same.

The group starts out talking about feelings, each sharing about their day, how they feel and what they expect today. As each group member talks, the facilitator stops with one of the clients who is having a hard time articulating why he feels the way he’s feeling. The group goes silent as if they were relating to the differences in his talk. The group takes off on a feelings journey. As the hour passes on and the group gets out for a quick break, one person goes up to the guy and states "I felt that way too and still at times the same feeling pops up but here’s what I do".

Another group will start shortly and the topic today is relapse prevention. As the group settles down a counselor begins teaching them how to identify triggers and stay away from potential dangerous places and/or people. Also they are given tools to have with them when they leave treatment such as calling a sponsor and having a little card with 10 numbers of people you can call before having a relapse, and other tools taught to them.

Next, we have another group on anger management or the counselors who go over the homework assignments each client was assigned to do. They read their answers out to the group and receive feedback or the counselors ask you to elaborate on your answers.

After that, the group's lunch is waiting in the kitchen. They have pizza, roast beef, fish, stews and soups or sandwiches all prepared by the staff. Sometimes a client wants to cook a lunch for everyone such as steak, or a dish of Italian origin consisting of alternate layers of pasta sheets and filling, especially alternating pasta, tomato sauce, cheese, and usually ground meat, baked in the oven. Various other sauces or fillings may also be used.

By now everyone has eaten, feels full and relaxed. Clients will see their counselors for an individual group session or they will take a bike ride with staff to the gym or whatever they planned for that afternoon. Sometimes they ride down to the beach or to a park to play Frisbee golf. Each day awaits another fun thing to do.

They go to another 12-Step meeting either in the late afternoon or in the early evening. You can bet whatever the plan for that day is, every client will have fun, education and a sense of fulfillment in that day of treatment.

Other groups they have are meditation groups, and social skills groups along with self esteem issue groups. We have physiological aspects of drugs and alcohol and how it can destroy the human body.

Each individual person is required to make their own beds and keep their rooms clean. Mostly everyone learns how to wash and dry their clothes when they need to. We have a new washer, dryer and soap at their facility free to use.

We supply wireless computer connections for the laptops and for other clients, we provide some use of a computer and time after the daily group meetings are over. Each client may have a cell phone, however, absolutely no talk time during any activity or group session is allowed.

Shore Break feels that one of the most important skills clients need to learn to remain sober is their ability to play. We take clients on a beach walk, bike ride, volleyball, movies and a whole lot of surfing activities as well as Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. Of course, all activities are after their group and individual sessions.

ALCOHOL REHAB
